The Blues Can – Southern Louisiana Cooking

Since my trip to New Orleans a couple years ago, I fell in love with Southern Louisiana food.  It really has to be one of my absolute favourite flavours in the whole world.  I never really went on a search for it in Calgary thinking there is nothing around.  Then a few weeks ago one of my friends was insisting that I have to try the food at The Blues Can.  Reallly?!?! I never heard about it but hey I’m willing to try anything.  Once she said the word Catfish, I said “Let’s Go!”  I’ve always been a fan of catfish and when it’s done right it’s amazing.

They recently started serving lunch at The Blues Can, they are normally a night time spot with excellent Blues Music.  From what I hear it’s quite the happening place in the evenings and on the weekends.  People say with the combination of the music and food makes it an unbelievable night.  My first and second visit back to back were both in the day.  Service is excellent and the food is out of this world.

We started off with freshly made corn bread with jalapeño butter, this butter should be on everything we eat in this world.  For my meal I had the Cat Fish Po’ Boy, the catfish was cooked perfect, the cajun spices were fantastic and the whole sandwich was simply delicious, it’s really mouth watering.  The side I chose for this dish was the Dirty Rice, the way it’s suppose to be made, WOW this was on the same level as the Po’ Boy.  My friend had the Catfish dinner with a side of the tomato based dirty rice and I’m not actually sure if she’s eaten anything else from the 500 times she’s been there.

After eating the amazing catfish and dirty rice, it was tough to imagine myself eating anything else on the menu but I did try their wings, huge, juicy and one of the best places for wings in my opinion.  Wing night is Weds and is 25 cents a piece plus they don’t skimp out and give skinny meatless wings.  Some other excellent dishes we had were the Alligator Jambalaya and Red Beans and Rice, both were very tasty but my winner goes to the Catfish!  I don’t think you can go wrong with any dish here.

Also big news as well, watch for their Food Truck rolling out soon!
