Ichi Rock [ra:ka]

Ichi Rock [ra:ka]

My wife and I got a chance to check out Ichi Rock on a kid free night!  I was really craving some fresh shucked oysters.  I follow Ichi Rock on Instagram, they’re always promoting their oyster specials so why not, $2 an oyster, what a great deal.  They had 4 different kinds, which were all good, but a couple of them were my favourite, unfortunately I forgot the names of them already. Ichi Rock’s concept is an Izakaya, which is a pub style Japanese place which serves good drinks, sake, and snacks (tapa’s).  The menu is fantastic, it has many choices whether you’re in the mood for sharing plates, appetizers, sushi, entrees, noodles, and more.  The service is very friendly, the place is up beat playing some cool tunes, and the place was busy with dine in, take out and delivery.  We tried some squid, salad, oysters, some delicious rolls, salmon nigiri, special scallop, and cajun mayo prawn sushi.  Everything was great, fresh, and didn’t disappoint.  I’m glad I found another great sushi joint in the city and look forward to going there again soon for some oyster heaven. Haru Sushi Bar – McKenzie Towne

Haru Sushi Bar – McKenzie Towne

I finally got a chance to eat at Haru Sushi Bar located in McKenzie Towne, which is right near New Brighton and Copperfield just off of 52nd Ave SE.  I am a weekly regular at Ajisai in Cranston which is under the same ownership.  Haru is a very nice casual sushi place with nice modern touches, a large sushi bar and some private booths for group settings.  The service was fantastic and just how I would expect as being part of Ajisai. As for the food, they have the regular type sushi and rolls, plus specialty rolls and lots of extras.  I ordered my usual favourites to compare against other sushi places.  We’ll start with the Salmon Sashimi, chilled perfect, fresh and large pieces.  The prawn tempura was well coated with the panko bread crumbs and deep fried just right, crispy not greasy.  The scallop gunkan is one of favourites and the unagi was delicious.  I have a real love for beef tataki right now and I truly could eat a hundred of these in a sitting.  For rolls, we went with two specialty ones, the first one being the Spider Roll (soft shell crab), if you like soft shell crab, you’ll love this roll.  The other roll we had was the Spicy Prawn Roll (Prawn tempura, yam tempura wrapped with steamed prawn, avocado & TOBICO), which was really good and not too spicy. If you’re in the SE looking for some great sushi and atmosphere, you’ll really enjoy Haru in McKenzie Towne. Click here for the menu for Haru Sushi Bar What’s In Front Of Us:...

The service is excellent, the food quality is superb and the prices are very reasonable.  I tend to order the Sushi boat because it provides a variety of things I like, which also comes with rice, miso soup and salad.  I’ll also order my standard things, like special scallop and a few pieces of extra salmon or tuna nigri.  Another favourite of mine at this place is the Chicken Katsu Curry Don.  They must have some of the best Japanese curry I’ve tasted anywhere, this is a must try. I truly love this place and if you’re looking for a standard Japanese/sushi place without all the fancy rolls and different fusion cuisine this is the place to come.  You won’t be disappointed. Ajisai has taken Japanese to another level and have added excellent creative twists to the flavours that work perfect.  Don’t be worried though, they still have kept all the traditional and staple Japanese foods and sushi we all love. The service is excellent, very attentive and quick.  The prices are not the lowest and just a bit more than I would normally see at a Japanese restaurant but it is not outrageous.  This will definitely be one of my main restaurants that I will be visiting regularly. What’s In Front Of Me: Cheese Tempura: 4.0/5 Brie Cheese Balsamic Sauce Deep Fried Basil Delicious combination of flavours and a great way to start the meal Spicy Crunch Tuna Roll: 5/5 Tuna, Cucumber, Deep Fried Wonton Skin, Spicy Sauce Simply Amazing and I’d order this again! Spicy Sauce is delicious and the crunch of the wonton skin is the highlight Sushi Pizza: 4.5/5 Deep fried rice patty, with a mixture of crab meat and avocado, topped with Salmon and Tuna One word, Yummy! OMG I need to facebook and tweet about this and can’t stop thinking about it) Food: 4.5/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: 4/5 Additional Comments: Great fast service  Nicely decorated  Reservations accepted  Lots of parking  Large selection of sushi and other menu items  Creative twists on many rolls Take out is great Kid friendly Yokozuna in my opinion is one of the top sushi restaurants in Calgary and area.  A few of us are still debating which our favourite is and right now there is no clear winner.  Yokozuna is among the debate.  This past visit is probably the 4th time I’ve been there, I do love it because it is kid friendly and they have an excellent kids menu.  The sushi has always been fresh, clean and addictive.  The rolls are monsters and the twists they put on them is unbelievable. They have a huge menu and it may take me a year or two to try everything which I’m looking forward to every minute of.  I always eat my staples every time I go for sushi, salmon nigiri, special scallop, and some unagi.  I still order it here but I feel guilty because there is going to be so much food on the table.  What’s In Front Of Me: Town of Okotoks Roll: 4/5 Avacado, cucumber, crab, masago wrapped with deep fried marinated squid, green onions, masago, and sichime (Japanese spices) topped with Yokozuna steak and mayonnaise sauces This is sushi roll heaven Comparison would be a giant California roll, with tons of calamari on top with amazing sauces $16.95 per roll   Crazy Buster Roll: 3.5/5 Tuna and salmon tempura roll and wrapped with fresh tuna and topped with sesame seeds, green onions, garlic chips and Yokozuna spicy sauce Good spicy taste Fresh tasting from the Tuna and Salmon Combo of flavours worked $15.95 per roll   Yokohama Roll: 4.5/5 Crab meat, deep fried gyoza, yam and asparagus tempura wrapped with avocado and sliced yam tempura with delicious seaweed sauce and sweet sour sauce Great combination of flavours Gyoza inside the roll is the major highlight One of my favourite rolls that I have tried there...
