Coco Brooks Pizza Review

I discovered Coco Brooks a few years ago when the other half of YYC’s Best Eats, Fuzzy, brought this awesome banana bread in a pizza box to my house.  What’s better than a layer of sweetened cream cheese between two baked banana bread crusts cut into pizza slices.  It’s so good. Coco Brooks has been around since 1999 and has 3 locations in Calgary, one at 42nd Ave and Blackfoot Trail SE, one on 32 Ave NE and the newest location on 52nd Street SE.  All the pizzas are a larger 8 inch individual size, in between from a traditional small and individual size.  It’s actually a really good size and perfect as a meal.  The best way to describe the pie is a thick pizza with a light crust, I call it a Saskatchewan style pizza, which is actually where the founder is from. You can order and eat at their restaurant, which is very casual and kid friendly or you can order frozen and make it at home.  I’ve only eaten there.  They have a ton of different options for pizzas, plus lots of other things on their menu.  Don’t forget to try dessert.  For all you Gluten Free seekers, they have it for you.  A special Gluten Free menu! Today I tried the the Mexican and the Greek Mykonos on a classic crust, hard to explain in words, it’s a really good pizza, my kind of pizza, it’s a nice thick sized pizza, but light with the cheese cooked just perfect.  You won’t find anything like this in Calgary.  I think everyone has their favourites and lately all I think about is having Coco Brooks. Blue Star Diner – Bridgeland

I got a chance to visit Blue Star Diner in Bridgeland around 11:30am on Wednesday.  As some of you may not know, Blue Star Diner is a new restaurant opened by the fantastic Dairy Lane Cafe in West Hillhurst, where I have declared as my favourite burger there in Calgary.  Well this place is not much different in terms of excellence.  The menu is very similar with a few added extra’s like the Lamb Burger, which I had and a few more sandwiches and breakfast items.  I’ve kind of spoiled myself by having the Dairy Lane Burger which makes it tough to try something different. So on my plate today was The Rhinopolous Lamb Burger (Alberta Lamb, Gull Valley tomato, fresh spinach, red onion, Sylvan Star goat feta, tzatziki sauce & sun-dried tomato jam) and instead of their amazing fries I had the soup of the day which I recall was a tomato and roasted red pepper gazpacho.  I’ve been wanting this burger from here so bad since I saw it as a special one day and didn’t try it.  I wasn’t disappointed at all.  Delicious, juicy and absolutely tasty plus the gazpacho was perfect.  Fuzzy had the  Alberta Honey & Dijon Chicken Burger (Alberta ground chicken mixed with local honey & Dijon mustard topped with Sylvan Star Gruyere, roasted red pepper, Gull Valley tomato, butter leaf lettuce, pickled red onion & sundried tomato jam)  You know it’s really good, when he has a mouth full of the burger, pointing at it and smiling!  One of our friends joined us for lunch today, we insisted for his first time here he had to go with the Dairy Lane Burger (Crystal Creek 28 day aged Angus beef, Gull Valley tomato, butter leaf lettuce, pickled red onion & DL burger mayo) with Bacon and Gouda cheese.  All he could say from start to finish was unbelievable. All in all Blue Star Diner is just as good as Dairy Lane Cafe, the restaurant is a tad bigger but without a patio, it’s very nice, simple and clean in there plus lots of street parking. Cora’s Breakfast

Well most of you have probably been to a Cora’s.  I’ll be quite honest, this is not one of my favourite places to go for breakfast, my family likes it much more than I do and my daughter just loves going to the “Sunny Place”.  But….I actually found a dish I really enjoyed on my last visit here at the downtown location in Bow Valley Square.  I know people love the fruit here and the amounts you get, but since I’ve had kids, I have to give up all my fruit to them.  The locations that I like best are the Okotoks and Bow Valley Square.  The quality of cooking is much better and it seems like they aren’t trying to just rush out the food, plus I find them way easier to get into. Today we had the Crepomelette, which my step-father enjoyed.  The asparagus eggs benedict for my daughters, it’s their favourite.  My wife had the fruit filled crepe which she really enjoyed. Last but not least, I think I found the gold of Cora’s, the Brie and Mushroom Eggs Benedict.  Let me tell you that I was truly impressed with this dish, it was super yummy and really wish there were 4 of them on my plate.  The mushrooms and brie were a perfect combination with the soft runny eggs.  Slurp!  Yumm! There is lots of fruit on the side plus hash browns.  If there was one thing Cora’s NEEDED to fix ASAP is their hash browns.  I can’t believe I’ve been going to Cora’s ever since they’ve come to Calgary and how no one has ever told Chez Cora the hash browns are not good at all.  They just taste soggy, bland and under cooked at all the locations. All in all I know many people love Cora’s including my whole family.  I’m not a huge fan but now…Brie and Mushrooms Eggs Benedict is what I am craving everyday.  Maybe I’m becoming a fan now… What’s In Front Of Us: Crepomelette Asparagus Eggs Benedict Fruit Filled Crepe Brie and Mushrooms Eggs Benedict  ...

Dairy Lane Part II – Gluten Free

This past weekend my wife and I were celebrating our 5th Wedding Anniversary.  Our first stop on our kid-free weekend was Dairy Lane Cafe down in Hillhurst.  We got there around 12:30pm and there was just a small 15 minute wait and got a table on the sunny patio.  It would be my second time coming and my wife’s first.  Fuzzy and his wife joined us as well.  It took me everything not to order the burger again because it is one of my favourite burgers in the city (see the post here http://t.co/BucT2Pz), I went with a Gluten Free option because one of twitter followers brought it up, the dish I decided on was the Breakfast Tostadas.  This dish was really really tasty, fresh and the crunch of the tostadas was just perfect.  This is a must try for everyone, not just for the Gluten Free people.  My wife went for the Chicken Club, another great choice with their delicious fries.  The Chicken Club can also be substituted with a Gluten Free bun, the avocado and pesto made this sandwich perfect.  Fuzzy after having the burger twice here, went for a breakfast option, Stuffed French Toast with Back Bacon and Sylvan Star Gruyere.  He thought it was very good, even though maple syrup on the table  he opted not to even use it.  Last but not least, Fuzzy’s wife had the three egg omelette with a side of avocado.  Must have been good, she ate it all! Next time no matter what I’m ordering the smoked salmon eggs benny.
