Grumans Delicatessen Brunch

Grumans Delicatessen Brunch

Like our normal routine…where to go to eat decisions for an hour, we finally found a place that was just perfect for breakfast. Luckily they posted something on Facebook that morning because I would have never thought it would be open for breakfast. We arrived at Grumans with our grumpy of grumpiest kids but right off the bat the waitress recognizes our challenges this morning and swoops in quickly to calm our girls down and put them in excellent moods. Thank you!!! I ordered the Smoked & Poached Breakfast Poutine, which is filled with Montreal smoke meat, cheese curds, two poached eggs, home-style hashbrowns, lemon hollandaise and a side of toast for $13. This is one of the best breakfast dishes I’ve had in a long long time. It was the perfect combination, just slice the poached eggs and let the runny yolk go all over the hashbrowns  and smoked meat.  The amazing hollandaise just brings this dish to another level, mmmmmm. The rest of the table ordered the Breakfast Special, which is a large plate filled with 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, hashbrowns, and toast $9. Also we had an order of eggs benedict which looked outstanding as well $13. Can’t wait to come back!...

Grumans Catering and Delicatessen

Fuzzy and I have been meeting our friend Erwin pretty much every Friday for lunch visiting great lunch spots around the city.  We were fortunate enough to visit Grumans recently.  It’s a nice looking deli with plenty of tables and street parking.  Located between Calgary Tourism and Sunterra on 11th Ave and McLeod Trail SE, opened 7 days a week 9am-3:30pm and closed on Holidays. Today we started off with the Lox Plate (capers, red onions, bagel chips $7), nice tasty treat before our meal.  Next up was the Chicken Matzo Ball Soup $6, first time for me, the matzo ball was pretty good with the soup, wish the soup was a tad hotter though, but wasn’t sure if that is how it’s suppose be served.  For my main I had the Grumans Grilled Special (all beef salami, smoked meat, stuffed chicken, rye bread, mustard with fresh cut fries $13), I actually think about this sandwich quite often, it was delicious.  Fuzzy had the Grumans Reuben (smoked meat, sauerkraut, swiss cheese, rye bread, russian dressing with fresh cut fries $13), he was quite impressed with his sandwich as well and there were no disappointments here. I saw a Smoked Meat Poutine come out while I was there, this is definitely a Must Have next time I visit Grumans, it looked so good!  Check out there menu here, Click Here. What’s In Front Of Us...

Keith’s Deli

I’m not sure why I’ve never noticed Keith’s Deli before but one of my friends said I just had to try out Keith’s Deli and I quote “Best Meatball Sandwich Ever.”  So what do Fuzzy and I do, drive straight over there for this recommendation.  We come up to this nice little deli, with a few tables and a line up, hmmmm we don’t see a meatball sandwich on the menu.  But there is a Keith’s special, homemade italian sausage sandwich.  Guess he got mixed up, but there was no disappointment here, great sandwich, nice bun, sausage was excellent and they have a spicy version too.  Plus at the counter they sell, Jamaican Patties, sausage rolls, wings and more homemade sausage.  I had a Jamaican Patty on the side, one of my weaknesses and I’m so glad there are good patties in the South. Prices are decent, I wish the sandwich was bigger but they know what they are doing.  Look at their Urbanspoon rating, best I’ve seen yet.  You can find Keith’s Deli across from Chinook Centre in the Red Lobster parking lot, go check it out.  ...

Spolumbo’s Quick Lunch

I’m sure most to all of you know or heard of Spolumbo’s.  If you haven’t been or had it before, they are famous for their sausages.  You can find them at any grocery store in Calgary now and many restaurants/pubs around the city serve them on the menu.  If you want to read about the Spolumbo’s history and how they got started click here.  I’m sure some of you have never made it down to their awesome deli in Inglewood located at 1308 9th Ave SE open 8am to 5:30pm Monday to Saturday, there is parking on the side and plenty of street parking.  I’ve been here quite a few times, always busy, lined up and have lots of seating.  There are tons of different sandwiches, soups, salads, and of course sausage.  There is also different specials they make on certain days and those sell out fast, click here to see the Daily Specials. Today both Fuzzy and I went with the Cutlet Parmigiana.  What a great sandwich! My mouth is just watering while I write this post.  Just a perfect sandwich with tasty cutlets, cheese and sauce on a beautiful fresh bun with a side of pickles.  The problem is when I have one of their sandwiches I want to go back everyday for one.  If you’ve never made it down to the deli, head over there for some lunch or a snack, give it a try soon, you won’t be disappointed.  I wonder if Fuzzy and I should start a Spolumbo’s food truck?            ...

Restaurant:  Boxwood Cafe Cuisine: Deli and Casual Dining Location: Central Memorial Park, 340 13th Ave SW Hours: Tuesdays to Sundays 11am to 10pm Contact: 403-265-4006  www.boxwoodcafe.ca Price Range: $5 to $16 Additional Comments: Street Parking available Take out orders ordered before 11am 10% off Student Discount of 10% with valid photo id Ingredients are local, seasonal and sustainable food Sister restaurant is River Cafe in Prince’s Island Park Nice selection of wine and beer I’ve heard a little buzz about this cafe.  I think I discovered it existed during the Big Taste Dining event a few weeks ago.  I had an opportunity on Friday to have lunch with my wife and mom, so I thought of this place first.  I find it funny when you always drive on the same street, in this case 4th Street and never notice it or even notice the big park it’s in.  When we pulled up, I was expecting something ultra fancy, but instead it was a nice looking casual feeling clubhouse. In the cafe there are few seats and one long shared table.  You seat yourself and order at the counter.  They have nice large bottles of water for you everywhere which great.  The menus are on the table and the specials are on the chalkboard behind the counter.  At first it was a little confusing what to do, but just watching everyone you got idea.  Get there early because it got busy. The menu which you can see online, I’m assuming changes time to time as they date the menu on the website.  The lunch has some nice looking items from soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts.  Today we I tried the Chickpea Fritters & Roasted Eggplant Sandwich with the soup of the day (roast chicken and white bean).  My wife had the Roasted Sunworks Farm Chicken Sandwich (which they make it fresh in the in-house rotisserie) and my mom had the special Chirizo Sandwich.  On the side we had a couple delicious dill and buttermilk biscuits.  It’s safe to say I can review all the food, because I ate everyone’s left overs up too. All three sandwiches were outstanding, on toasted house made ciabatta.  My favourite out of the three was the Chickpea one.  Tasted like a falafel sandwich and the combination of all the ingredients made this one a winner.  The soup was good I drank every last drop and the biscuits were excellent.  I saw a few people get salads and sides which all looked yummy too.  I obviously didn’t have room for dessert but the one I need to try is the Ice Cream Sandwich, Mint or Saskatoon Berry. Kickers Smoked Meat & Deli – Kicken’ it up a notch

Restaurant: Kickers Smoked Meat & Deli       Cuisine: Deli Date Visited: March 10, 2011 Location:  1215 1st Street SW, Calgary Hours:  Monday to Friday 11am – 7pm and Saturday’s 12pm – 5pm Contact:  403-288-8860     www.kickersdeli.ca Overall Rating: Rating Scale 1. Yuck 2. I’m eating it but won’t order again 3. This is good 4. This is really good worth recommending 5. OMG I need to facebook and tweet about this and can’t stop thinking about it Food: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Overall: 4/5 Additional Comments: Smoked meat is directly from Montreal  Poutine is made of Quebec Cheese curds  Fries are made in a greaseless fryer  Many other different types of sandwiches Street parking available Our next stop on the Downtown Calgary Big Taste tour was Kicker’s Smoked Meat & Deli.  This deli is located in the old coat check room of the Taz nightclub for all of you that can remember those days.  It’s a nice small place good for a quick bite or take-out. For the Big Taste menu we were able to choose any sandwich on the board, so we decided on the Infamous Kitchener Reuben (on Rye), anything grilled with cheese can’t be beat.  Then on the corner of our eye the word Poutine popped out of the menu, well again, cheese, gravy and fries (another winning combination).  So Tom, the owner/operator, suggested putting Montreal smoked meat on our poutine, and we’re talking about chunks of smoked meat with all the herbs and spices on it.  Needless to say everything tasted great, meat was great, smoky and moist.  I’m not an expert in Montreal smoked meat, but for us, it was excellent. One of our friends was with us who opted for the Miss Montreal on Rye, which is a Smoked Salmon and cream cheese sandwich.  So we swapped half our reuben for half of the smoked salmon one.  Now we know why it’s their number 2 best seller.  Smoked salmon and cream cheese with capers, what a great sandwich.  I’ll definitely be back again!
