Briggs Kitchen & Bar – Best Burger Ever

I know I say this a lot about having “The Best Burger Ever” but seriously it really was.  I had the 100% chuck burger topped with Thick Bacon, Blue Cheese and a Fried Egg on their signature egg bun.  The fries where great, but on my first bite of this fantastic burger, I forgot I even had fries.  All I could do was wrap my mouth around this magnificent sandwich while pointing at my burger to gesture how great it was to my buddies.  This burger was the perfect combo of juiciness, greasiness, and flavour.   The guy behind me kept saying “It’s that the bomb!”  Next one I’ll try is with Cheddar, Thick Bacon, Avocado, and a Fried Egg, now that sounds like “Da Bomb!”                                ...

Dishcrawl – Exploring YYC neighborhoods one plate at a time

We were very excited to be part of great experience called DishcrawlYYC, and like the name says, a Food Crawl, yes you heard it right.  You get to experience food at 4 different restaurants all within walking distance plus drink specials!  You don’t know the meeting location until you are emailed it 48 hours prior to the event and the rest is kept a secret.  The first event that DishcrawlYYC did, SOLD OUT and the next event is a Mission Dishcrawl and only has one ticket left with her hosting this Mission community event 2 different nights.  Keep informed of the next DishcrawlYYC event by Clicking Here. For this event our first stop/meeting place was Brewsters on 11th Ave, we all know that Brewsters has an excellent selection of drinks and the special dish of the night here was a Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf, meatloaf was nice and moist and the bacon, well bacon makes every dish all that much better! The next stop was Brewster’s sister restaurant, Beer Revolution, they have an excellent Beer Board showing all the beer on tap, how old it was and the price.  The food here was an excellent thin crust pizza buffet.  If you check out their menu, I need to try the Hot Wing Pizza and Sticky Curry Wings, sounds so good.  Click here to visit their website. Beer Revolution Pizza Third up was The Rhino Killer Smokehouse, right next to and attached to District.  They have some great drinks and the food was just as good.  We got served up a Beef Brisket Slider, a Pulled Pork Slider and Deep Fried pickle, all were delicious and moist.  The menu looks great, they have tons of BBQ, a huge selection of poutine and a Bucket of Bacon if you really needed some. Last up for dessert was an ultra cool place across the street called Canvas, which is located in the Former Three Cheers on Electric Avenue, but this place resembles nothing like the good ol’ bar.  There is a restaurant on the main level, with a nice art gallery in the lower level, which can hold to some great catering functions, during this Dishcrawl we were invited down to lower level in the gallery for some amazing hand crafted desserts. Canvas Coffee and Wine Dishcrawl is doing something great for us food lovers here in Calgary, she is giving us a chance to visit some great food establishments in a fun and exciting way.  A great place to meet fellow foodies, meet the chef’s, managers, and owner’s of these local restaurants.  Stay tuned for some higher end events as well.  I...

Dobson’s Restaurant & Bar

Dobson’s Restaurant & Bar

It’s been a long time coming but we’ve finally made it to Dobson’s.  It’s located off of McLeod Trail near Chinook Centre next to the Keg.  This review is over the course of two visits as the first time was really good and there was much more we wanted to try. I’ve always have the weakness for big honking burgers and there it was on the menu shining with a halo, the Smoke Stack Burger, weighing in at $18, which is made with Spring Creek Beef, cheddar cheese, double smoked bacon, bbq short rib, crispy onions, garlic aioli, butter lettuce, tomato, and pickle with a side of fries.  As you can tell by the picture below, it’s massive!  A hint for you when you eat this is place a pile of fries below your eating surface and while you eat the burger, let all the juicy goodness and sauces fall onto the fries. Mmmmmm.  This burger was delicious and I will order this over and over.  I did feel my heart skip a beat when I was done, but so worth it. This visit we also ordered an appetizer which was recommended by the waitress, Steak Bites, which was marinated sirloin bites with rosemary beer mustard.  Tasty dish and the mustard dip was outstanding. The second visit consisted of three appetizers, two orders of wings, hot and maple chipotle, great wings, great flavours.  The third appy was the Meat Lovers Flat Bread which were all great starters for our group.   The waitress also came by with a Chef’s creation, Chicken Won Tons, one thing I can say is, please put this on the menu! My main dish this visit was recommended by Dobson’s on YYC’s Best Eats Facebook Page, in which they claimed to have amazing fish and chips.  So I had to have it.  I’m always hesitant when it comes to Fish and Chips, I’m always worried about over battering which just ruins a fish and chip meal for me.  When Mr. D’s Fish & Chips sat in front of me I thought that it was going to be one of those times.  I was surprisingly shocked, it was super light, the fish was cooked perfect and the tartar sauce was just perfect.  I would not hesitate to order this again, and yes Dobson’s it was really good. If you haven’t been to Dobson’s, be sure to put it on your list of places to try.  They welcome everybody and even kids.  I believe I sat on the lounge side which is the backside of the restaurant.  The service both times were excellent and atmosphere is trendy...

Just Found A Hidden Gem – Patisserie du Soleil

The perfect cafe tucked away in the heart of Woodbine in the SW is where I visited last Thursday for breakfast.  I came across this place doing a U-Turn showing some houses one day and saw this neat little cafe, I told myself that I definitely need to come back and check this place out.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the moment I walked into this cafe, I knew I was in for a truly great experience.  Walking up to the counter, the wall menu was huge, lots of choices, coffees, teas, breakfast and lunch.  Beside the counter is 2 large displays of French pastries and desserts.  To the right of the counter is a ton of in house made Gelato which I didn’t get a chance to try yet. After my meal I got a chance to speak with the owner and executive pastry chef, it was very nice and refreshing to hear about the passion and love he puts into his gift.  Everything is made from scratch and you can tell the high quality in his work.  They use the freshest of ingredients and believe in using local foods to support local business.  There is also a sister location in Glenmore Landing but in my opinion, you must try this experience here at the Woodbine location first. I started off with a Chocolate Truffle Mochaccino, which was delicious.  It was hard to actually choose what I wanted to try first but the Eggs Florentine stuck out at me (poached eggs served on a bed of sautéed spinach, crumbled bacon, and caramelized shallots, served with toast you can add smoked salmon as well).  This was such a beautiful and light dish with the perfect balance of flavours.  I also had the opportunity to try a savoury scone hot and fresh, it was absolutely to die for.  So the crazy foodie in me, I just had to share this with as many people as I could.  So I took home 36 pieces of freshly baked goods to share with my office, friends and family.  The cranberry white chocolate scone was a hit!  I also got the chance to try the chocolate cinnamon bun and almond croissant, which both were outstanding. I can’t wait to have business meetings here, family breakfast and lunches, how has it taken me this long to find this absolute gem. NOtaBLE – 5th Wedding Anniversary Dinner

NOtaBLE is one of my favourite restaurants out there and same for my wife, so it was easy to choose this place for Part 1 of our anniversary dinner, on the real day we have something new booked that we haven’t tried yet.  It was 7pm on a Saturday and we didn’t have reservations.  If you want reservations, they do book half the restaurant and the other half is for walk in.  So don’t be afraid to try your luck if you don’t have reservations.  Located on 4611 Bowness Rd NW (403-288-4372) with plenty of street parking, you would find this an odd location but all is forgotten once you step into this amazing place.  This would be my 2nd time here, Fuzzy wrote a review before for his 5th Wedding Anniversary Dinner here, so I’m writing my take on the food.  Funny thing, Joe was our server/bartender/twitter guy again, easy to say, great service, great drinks and good time all around. The first dish we tried were the Seared East Coast scallops, grilled romaine hearts, bacon & caper dressing, this was given to us by mistake, I actually ordered a different salad, but when it was put in front of me I said, leave it here, it looked so damn good.  Flavours were outstanding and as you watch on Food Network, it’s all about how perfect the scallops are cooked and they were just that, perfect.  There is a small and a large, I had the small so a large would have been a great meal sized salad.  Next up was the Dungeness crab & shrimp bake, wilted spinach, aged-cheddar & toasts, easily a great appy for sharing, nice chunky seafood, delicious taste and it’s going to make it to my table every time I come here.  Joe recommended I have the new monthly inspired burger so I had to go with it, plus the fries are awesome and my wife had the Rock crab cake sandwich, togarashi mayo, mango & cucumber sunomono.  The burger was just as good as Joe made it out to be, cooked just perfect and all the fixin’s and flavours naturally went great together.  My wife was so so with her sandwich, nothing wrong with it though, the flavour profiles of the sandwich just wasn’t for her.  So I got to taste a few bites of the sandwich and I understood where she was coming from but must admit it was still pretty good. In all honesty, if you haven’t been here, you really have to make it down here.  It’s a great restaurant with a casual feel.  You have people in Jeans and Polo’s to...

FARM

FARM

I once saw a great food blog post from an awesome Calgary food blogger, ugonnaeatthat, she posted a grilled cheese that looked so good and was being served up by a local cheese company, Janice Beaton’s Fine Cheese.  I never got a chance to try the tasty looking sandwich and I’ve never stopped thinking about it.  So today, we got a chance to try out FARM over on 1006 17th Ave SW which Janice owns.  The story behind the nicely designed casual restaurant is the use of fresh and local ingriedients.  Quoting from their website is “Albertan Food Everyday We love our suppliers! Delicious warm foods inspired by our Province and all the great local suppliers who bring their product right to our door. They are our neighbours and friends.  We work closely with farmers who care for their animals and respect the land. Our kitchen folks create daily features that showcase local bison, lamb, pork, beef, fish….”  You can definitley feel and taste the freshness of all the ingriendents and food. We stopped in at 11:30 on a Friday (by the way they take reservations online and by phone) I ordered the FARM Burger (Pura Vida beef, Broxburn lettuce and tomatoes, FARM relish, FARM back bacon, 3 year cheddar), this burger you can tell was house made, combination of all the ingredients were perfect, the only thing I felt that could have been better was the bun, which seemed a little on the dry side and possible a day old as it crumbled a bit like dry buns.  Overall the burger was tasty and delicious.  Fuzzy had the Janice bubbling, midly spicy mac n’ cheese (with Broek Acres Smoked Ham Hock), he loved the kick with the spicyness, creaminess and puts this mac n’ cheese as one of his tops, one day we’ll publish what his absolute favorite mac n’ cheese is in town.  Our friend, a huge foodie, had the WBLT (Hog Wild wild boar porchetta, lettuce, Broxburn tomatoes, FARM mayo), he said it was the best BLT he’s ever eaten and fell in love with the sandwich.  Overall our impression of FARM is pretty good.  The service was very good, prompt and food came out in a decent time.  It’s nice to be able to see the open kitchen, which has seating along the side of it, so you can see them preparing all your food.  I saw them make a few Cutting Boards for other tables which has a nice selection of fine meats and cheese.  I will have to try this next time I go there. What’s in Front of Us: FARM Burger Mac n’ Cheese WBLT...
