Day 7 Stampede Food Fiasco Gelato

Wow this year at the Calgary Stampede has been a hot one, best weather I’ve seen for this time of year in a long time, which makes this Day 7 blog post even more fitting.  If you don’t know what gelato is, check it out here www.fiascogelato.ca.  In short, it’s gourmet ice cream, made in small batches with the finest ingredients.  Sorry Fiasco, I know not to call it ice cream, but for the people who don’t know what it is, it’s the easiest way to describe it. Not only is it a great treat during these hot days but they’ve had a spot for a few years on the Stampede grounds that is just perfect.  You can find them underneath the Super Dogs venue at the Big Four building, I believe it’s called the Range down there.  It’s an excellent place to sit down, cool off, enjoy some air conditioning, and Gelato.  It’s basically a food court and a great place if you have kids. Today I had the Blood Orange, it has to be my 2nd favourite right now, number 1 for me is Salted Caramel but I wanted to change it up today.  The flavours are so intense (in a good way), tastes amazing, and super refreshing.  By the way they are one of the original food trucks around town, you can follow them on Twitter here www.twitter.com/fiascogelato...

Day 6 Stampede Food – BBQ Beef On A Bun

The Annual 10 Days of Stampede Eating is usually written about food on the Calgary Stampede grounds, but today we’ll make an exception.  We were lucky enough to be invited to The Roadhouse Nightclub this afternoon for their first annual Beef on a Bun contest which was also in support of the Calgary Food Bank.  Each beef on a bun was only $1, what a smokin’ deal.  Watch for this event next year, it’s one you don’t want to miss.  Today there were 5 Calgary eateries that participated in this challenge, The Main Dish, Dobson’s, Spolumbo’s, Jameson’s Pub, and Big D’s Smokehouse.  What a great venue for this competition, out on the patio, under a stampede tent, stocked bars, beer tubs, and food.  I can’t wait to see more restaurants entering next year, perhaps YYC’s Best Eats can compete! The first bun we started with was The Main Dish’s creation.  8 hour slow roasted beef with house made Jack Daniels Bourbon BBQ Sauce, topped with a kale and blueberry slaw and chipotle yogurt cream.  I have never been a beef on a bun fan, but this one certainly changed my views on this dish.  Beef was super tender, flavours were on point, and the amazing kale and blueberry slaw just made it perfect. The second beef on a bun was Dobson’s, at first looking at the sandwich we were thinking, how in the world can another beef on a bun compare to The Main Dish’s, well first bite we fell in love and the more you ate it the better it got.  The crispy onions and home made sauce kicked this bun to a whole new level, so tasty with a nice hint of smokiness. Next up is Spolumbo’s, I was totally wrong on my prediction of this beef on a bun.  This one was heaping full of tender beef, slathered in a delicious spicy sauce in the best bun possible.  This should be called a bun around a beef, the bun made this beef so good and we couldn’t stop eating this one till it was finished. Next on my plate was Jameson’s Pub, the bun was nice and soft, and the meat inside would be a typical beef on a bun kicked up several notches.  Beef was shredded, tender, sauced up and served like it is, Beef on a Bun.  The traditionalist Beef on a Bun connoisseurs would really enjoy this one. Last but not least is Big D’s Smokehouse (located in the Calgary Farmers Market) who did up the beef on a bun traditional BBQ style.  Slow hickory smoked beef brisket that was smoking for 18...

Day 5 Stampede Food – Lemon Heaven

Isn’t this the best weather for some Lemonade!  There is one lemonade stand that is my favourite at the Calgary Stampede which is Lemon Heaven.  This one we visited is just on the South side of Nashville North, but they are all over the grounds.  If I accidentally get a lemonade from another stand other than this company I feel ripped off.  They do have 3 flavours, original, cherry and one other that I can’t remember.  The one I always get is the original.  It’s pretty much over priced sugar water with a lemon, the best way to have this lemonade is to use your straw and bash the lemon like crazy and this drink is so refreshing on a hot day or after some deep fried food.  I always have to get one while I’m on the grounds....

Day 4 Stampede Food – Hot Wisconsin Cheese

This is our favourite at the Calgary Stampede right now. Battered deep fried cheese with dips, who wouldn’t want this.  Well no matter what the cost I do have a weakness for this place, so yummy and so gooey.  I normally order the Super Combo, which have all 3 types of cheese on a little platter, Mozza Fingers, Cheddar Nuggets and Jalapeno Cheddar (my favourite), really it’s worth it just to have it once a year.  There are 3 different dips to choose from which is pizza sauce, ranch and jalapeno ranch (yumm). The bonus part about this Cheese stand is that they have thier own seating next to this fine establishment, so go ahead you deserve some deep fried cheese today. Any suggestions what we should eat tomorrow?  ...

Day 3 Stampede Food – The Colossal Onion

If you love onions, love onion rings, and love deep fried batter, here it is, The Colossal Onion.  A huge onion cut up, battered, deep fried and served with a Santa Fe style dipping sauce.  Delicious if this is your thing.  My mom has to get this at least once a year at the Stampede, which gives me a chance to eat more things because I just poach off her.  Yum Yum! This is somewhat the same Blooming Onion that Outback Steakhouse has, and yes I like Outback Steakhouse too, sniff sniff it’s gone from Calgary, but at the same time I didn’t enjoy the Calgary one....

Day 2 – Stampede Food – Fresh Cut Fries

We’ve been on a hunt for some really good fresh cut french fries on the grounds for the past few years.  So far the best one we’ve found, I think it’s call “Fresh Cut Fries.”  It’s across from the row of food trucks next to the dream home.  I also believe it’s next to the Pizza 73 food stand.  For $6 you get a large order of fries cooked to order, fries are nice and golden brown, sprinkle some salt on this and BAM some perfect fries. Tomorrow we do the onion bloom. Happy Stampeding!!!...
