Dairy Lane Part II – Gluten Free

This past weekend my wife and I were celebrating our 5th Wedding Anniversary.  Our first stop on our kid-free weekend was Dairy Lane Cafe down in Hillhurst.  We got there around 12:30pm and there was just a small 15 minute wait and got a table on the sunny patio.  It would be my second time coming and my wife’s first.  Fuzzy and his wife joined us as well.  It took me everything not to order the burger again because it is one of my favourite burgers in the city (see the post here http://t.co/BucT2Pz), I went with a Gluten Free option because one of twitter followers brought it up, the dish I decided on was the Breakfast Tostadas.  This dish was really really tasty, fresh and the crunch of the tostadas was just perfect.  This is a must try for everyone, not just for the Gluten Free people.  My wife went for the Chicken Club, another great choice with their delicious fries.  The Chicken Club can also be substituted with a Gluten Free bun, the avocado and pesto made this sandwich perfect.  Fuzzy after having the burger twice here, went for a breakfast option, Stuffed French Toast with Back Bacon and Sylvan Star Gruyere.  He thought it was very good, even though maple syrup on the table  he opted not to even use it.  Last but not least, Fuzzy’s wife had the three egg omelette with a side of avocado.  Must have been good, she ate it all! Next time no matter what I’m ordering the smoked salmon eggs benny. Red’s Diner – Nom Nom Nom

I’ve driven by Red’s Diner for quite some time now, it’s right on the corner of 4th Street and 15th Avenue SW.  I had the chance to give it a try today for lunch.  I went with a good friend of mine from University at around 1pm.  There were a couple tables available so obviously it looks like they do get busy for lunch.  The atmosphere of Red’s is a cool diner feel with a breakfast style counter/bar feeling.  Even though a small place, it is very spacious and inviting.  I’m not sure if it’s a secret but I feel like I found some secret free parking for Red’s Diners customers across the street on 15th Ave behind the old Rose and Crown. I’ve heard very good things about Red’s and was excited to try.  They have a split menu of breakfast and lunch (served after 11am), menu has lots of tasty looking choices but I could only pick one today.  I opted for the Short Rib Hash ($13.99) today with eggs over easy and multigrain toast.  It was very good with some sort of gravy in between the short ribs and eggs, the best part was breaking the egg and letting the yolk ooze over the short ribs, Mmmmm.  My friend had the Southwest Egg White Omelette ($11.99) with a Fruit cup ($2.99), normally this dish would come with hash browns and toast but she decided to skip that.  She really enjoys Red’s and always loves the food.  It’s simple yet done well.  I can’t wait to head back to try the Prairie Platter, 2 Eggs your way with Homemade Potato Cheddar Perogies, Rocky’s Kielbasa, and Sour Cream, now that sounds awesome. Belmont Diner in Marda Loop

I love little breakfast joints, you know you’ll always get down to earth good meals. This was my first visit to Belmont Cafe, a foodie friend of mine, Ella (watch out for her upcoming food/cooking blog), said I should check this place out, so I headed down there with her. Before I went there, I took a quick peek at the website and noticed they are part of Galaxie Diner, Avenue Diner, Myhre’s Deli, and Chuckwagon Cafe (which I need to go to next). I’ve been to Galaxie with my daughter and loved it there. So simple yet so good. Belmont is small like Galaxie and I went mid morning so it wasn’t hard to get in. I can imagine it would be hard to get into this place weekend mornings. They do cool little things for kids, like fun pancakes (see below). I had the smoked salmon eggs benedict on a croissant which was really good. Eggs poached perfect, leaving it runny enough for the dish topped with delicious hollandaise. Just a small little note: ALL YOU CAN EAT HASHBROWNS!...

Walking through the door, you know this place will be great.  Cool little funky atmosphere with chalk writing on the ceilings and the décor just perfect.  The service was excellent and fast.  There are lots to choose from on the menu.  I wanted the eggs Benedict, but I always get that so I decided on something a little lighter.  This place is definitely a place to go for the breakfast lovers.  What’s In Front Of Me: Huevos del Rancho: 4.0/5 Whole wheat tortilla Topped with a generous amount of sour cream and guacamole Side of beans, delicious homemade salsa, a piece of sweet honeydew and watermelon Very good and will try other things on this menu before ordering again $10.89 for this dish   Breakfast Taquitos (this was a special of the day…not on the menu): 5/5 3 flour tortilla’s topped with chilli, cheese, scrambled eggs, and sour cream A good blend of flavours that complimented each other Simply Amazing and I’d order this again! $10.89 per order   Herb Potato: 3/5 Large wedge cut fries/hashbrown Good seasoning Hot and crispy $3.99 per order...
