Grumans Delicatessen Brunch

Grumans Delicatessen Brunch

Like our normal routine…where to go to eat decisions for an hour, we finally found a place that was just perfect for breakfast. Luckily they posted something on Facebook that morning because I would have never thought it would be open for breakfast. We arrived at Grumans with our grumpy of grumpiest kids but right off the bat the waitress recognizes our challenges this morning and swoops in quickly to calm our girls down and put them in excellent moods. Thank you!!! I ordered the Smoked & Poached Breakfast Poutine, which is filled with Montreal smoke meat, cheese curds, two poached eggs, home-style hashbrowns, lemon hollandaise and a side of toast for $13. This is one of the best breakfast dishes I’ve had in a long long time. It was the perfect combination, just slice the poached eggs and let the runny yolk go all over the hashbrowns  and smoked meat.  The amazing hollandaise just brings this dish to another level, mmmmmm. The rest of the table ordered the Breakfast Special, which is a large plate filled with 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, hashbrowns, and toast $9. Also we had an order of eggs benedict which looked outstanding as well $13. Can’t wait to come back!...

AKA Winebar – Brunchin’ It Up

One fine Saturday morning Fuzzy and I got the chance to have brunch over at AKA Wine Bar.  I’ve heard time and time again, Best Eggs Benny in town, which is my favourite breakfast dish out there. You can find AKA Wine Bar on Breakfast Ave (AKA Edmonton Trail) right across from Diner Deluxe.  It’s a small restaurant but seems to hold a nice amount of people, I believe we were in the heart of breakfast and only waited 10 mins.  You can check out their menu at www.akawinebar.com.  They have a nice variety of dishes that all sound mouthwatering but I was there for the Eggs Benedict. The Eggs Benedict is served on house made Brioche, topped with Tomato, Hollandaise Sauce, and Potato Hash, I also opted for the Pork Belly  on it.  This was a fabulous eggs benedict, eggs poached perfect, delicious hollandaise and the brioche was just perfect.  Fuzzy has the Fried Chicken & Waffles, which was made of confit chicken leg, organic quinoa waffles, poached egg and organic maple syrup.  He was in heaven with that syrup, which he ate every last drop. This is definitely an amazing brunch spot serving up top notch food, go check it out soon!  Forget waiting in long lines across the street when you can get great food here too. Naina’s Kitchen – Stuffed Burger Heaven

On Facebook I have this contest running and all you have to do is comment on my status update what your favourite burger is.  We have the usual great answers, like Peter’s Drive-In, Five Guys, Boogies Burgers, and much more, which all I don’t disagree with, but one great comment stuck out, “Gotta be the stuffed burgers at Naina’s Kitchen” by Todd C., I quickly looked up their website, www.nainaskitchen.com and yes I had to go there. First things first, this is the Ultimate Hidden Gem.  Now lets talk about burgers.  Could this be one of the best burgers i’ve had in Calgary, YES!  This a very casual place with a nice variety on the menu and you can tell love and care is put into the food they make.  Their slogan is “Home Cooking with Style” and down home cooking is what is served.  The owner and staff know everyone by name so you know loyalty is there which says a lot about this place. Onto the food.  First up we had the Naina’s Five Cheese Mac n Cheese, which is made with Sharp Cheddar, Gruyere, Friulano, Asiago and Swiss, we also added Bacon and Caramelized Onions infused in the dish.  When it came out, it was fresh, hot, and topped with crumbled goldfish crackers and ripple chips (Awesome idea).  Fuzzy and I both enjoyed this Mac and Cheese a lot. Next up was our burgers, the owner told us that it does take some time to make these Stuffed Burgers, yes that’s right I said it, Stuffed Burgers! (Meaning toppings inside the hamburger patties). It does take about 20-25 mins to make and if you’re in a hurry or have a short lunch break, you’re welcome to give her a call and order ahead.  The burger also comes with fresh cut fries, soup or salad.  Great deal at $10.50-$11.50.  The 1/2 pound Stuffed Burger I had was stuffed inside with Swiss, Mushrooms, Bacon and Fresh Jalapeños (not pickled) and Fuzzy had the Stuffed Burger with Cheddar, Bacon, Caramelized Onions and Fresh Jalapeños.  Both came with delicious fresh cut fries and I had a side of gravy too.  Their burgers are served on a large kaiser bun which was perfect to hold this monster.  Whoever thought of a stuffed burger is a genius, so moist, delicious, the cheese melted perfect inside, and the Jalapeños were a great touch.  Overall burger was outstanding! If you love burgers you have to go check Naina’s Kitchen out as soon as you can.  This is one hidden gem I hope that doesn’t become hidden anymore.  It’s that good and everyone needs to...

Blue Star Diner – Bridgeland

I got a chance to visit Blue Star Diner in Bridgeland around 11:30am on Wednesday.  As some of you may not know, Blue Star Diner is a new restaurant opened by the fantastic Dairy Lane Cafe in West Hillhurst, where I have declared as my favourite burger there in Calgary.  Well this place is not much different in terms of excellence.  The menu is very similar with a few added extra’s like the Lamb Burger, which I had and a few more sandwiches and breakfast items.  I’ve kind of spoiled myself by having the Dairy Lane Burger which makes it tough to try something different. So on my plate today was The Rhinopolous Lamb Burger (Alberta Lamb, Gull Valley tomato, fresh spinach, red onion, Sylvan Star goat feta, tzatziki sauce & sun-dried tomato jam) and instead of their amazing fries I had the soup of the day which I recall was a tomato and roasted red pepper gazpacho.  I’ve been wanting this burger from here so bad since I saw it as a special one day and didn’t try it.  I wasn’t disappointed at all.  Delicious, juicy and absolutely tasty plus the gazpacho was perfect.  Fuzzy had the  Alberta Honey & Dijon Chicken Burger (Alberta ground chicken mixed with local honey & Dijon mustard topped with Sylvan Star Gruyere, roasted red pepper, Gull Valley tomato, butter leaf lettuce, pickled red onion & sundried tomato jam)  You know it’s really good, when he has a mouth full of the burger, pointing at it and smiling!  One of our friends joined us for lunch today, we insisted for his first time here he had to go with the Dairy Lane Burger (Crystal Creek 28 day aged Angus beef, Gull Valley tomato, butter leaf lettuce, pickled red onion & DL burger mayo) with Bacon and Gouda cheese.  All he could say from start to finish was unbelievable. All in all Blue Star Diner is just as good as Dairy Lane Cafe, the restaurant is a tad bigger but without a patio, it’s very nice, simple and clean in there plus lots of street parking. Just Found A Hidden Gem – Patisserie du Soleil

The perfect cafe tucked away in the heart of Woodbine in the SW is where I visited last Thursday for breakfast.  I came across this place doing a U-Turn showing some houses one day and saw this neat little cafe, I told myself that I definitely need to come back and check this place out.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the moment I walked into this cafe, I knew I was in for a truly great experience.  Walking up to the counter, the wall menu was huge, lots of choices, coffees, teas, breakfast and lunch.  Beside the counter is 2 large displays of French pastries and desserts.  To the right of the counter is a ton of in house made Gelato which I didn’t get a chance to try yet. After my meal I got a chance to speak with the owner and executive pastry chef, it was very nice and refreshing to hear about the passion and love he puts into his gift.  Everything is made from scratch and you can tell the high quality in his work.  They use the freshest of ingredients and believe in using local foods to support local business.  There is also a sister location in Glenmore Landing but in my opinion, you must try this experience here at the Woodbine location first. I started off with a Chocolate Truffle Mochaccino, which was delicious.  It was hard to actually choose what I wanted to try first but the Eggs Florentine stuck out at me (poached eggs served on a bed of sautéed spinach, crumbled bacon, and caramelized shallots, served with toast you can add smoked salmon as well).  This was such a beautiful and light dish with the perfect balance of flavours.  I also had the opportunity to try a savoury scone hot and fresh, it was absolutely to die for.  So the crazy foodie in me, I just had to share this with as many people as I could.  So I took home 36 pieces of freshly baked goods to share with my office, friends and family.  The cranberry white chocolate scone was a hit!  I also got the chance to try the chocolate cinnamon bun and almond croissant, which both were outstanding. I can’t wait to have business meetings here, family breakfast and lunches, how has it taken me this long to find this absolute gem. Cora’s Breakfast

Cora’s Breakfast

Well most of you have probably been to a Cora’s.  I’ll be quite honest, this is not one of my favourite places to go for breakfast, my family likes it much more than I do and my daughter just loves going to the “Sunny Place”.  But….I actually found a dish I really enjoyed on my last visit here at the downtown location in Bow Valley Square.  I know people love the fruit here and the amounts you get, but since I’ve had kids, I have to give up all my fruit to them.  The locations that I like best are the Okotoks and Bow Valley Square.  The quality of cooking is much better and it seems like they aren’t trying to just rush out the food, plus I find them way easier to get into. Today we had the Crepomelette, which my step-father enjoyed.  The asparagus eggs benedict for my daughters, it’s their favourite.  My wife had the fruit filled crepe which she really enjoyed. Last but not least, I think I found the gold of Cora’s, the Brie and Mushroom Eggs Benedict.  Let me tell you that I was truly impressed with this dish, it was super yummy and really wish there were 4 of them on my plate.  The mushrooms and brie were a perfect combination with the soft runny eggs.  Slurp!  Yumm! There is lots of fruit on the side plus hash browns.  If there was one thing Cora’s NEEDED to fix ASAP is their hash browns.  I can’t believe I’ve been going to Cora’s ever since they’ve come to Calgary and how no one has ever told Chez Cora the hash browns are not good at all.  They just taste soggy, bland and under cooked at all the locations. All in all I know many people love Cora’s including my whole family.  I’m not a huge fan but now…Brie and Mushrooms Eggs Benedict is what I am craving everyday.  Maybe I’m becoming a fan now… What’s In Front Of Us: Crepomelette Asparagus Eggs Benedict Fruit Filled Crepe Brie and Mushrooms Eggs Benedict  ...
