Jamaican Patties at Lloyd’s Patty Plus

Jamaican Patties at Lloyd’s Patty Plus

I grew up on Jamaican Patties during my adolescent years in Toronto.  Everywhere I turned they were there, in the malls, food courts, convenience stores, and even in our high school cafeteria.  Such a great eat for so cheap.  In Toronto you can get them with Coco bread so it was like a Jamaican Patty Sandwich, so good.  It’s been so long since I’ve had it with Coco bread, but I found it at this amazing Caribbean restaurant in Vancouver called Calabash Bistro last year, so if you get a chance to get it between some fresh coco bread, DO IT! My favourite has to be a spicy beef patty, so this is what I ordered right at Lloyd’s Patty Plus, hot, fresh, flakey and just as good as they’ve always been growing up.  Truly Lloyd’s does it right, for some reason it was the first time I went to the location to get one, by the way it’s in Short Pants Plaza (I love it when I can reference this plaza) just off of Memorial Drive and 28 St SE.  At our office parties, one of the Realtors I work with brings in cocktail size one’s from Lloyd’s, tastes just as great as the normal size ones but very addictive. Here’s a picture of it…not a super appetizing pic but trust me it’s amazing....

Logo’s Bakery – Chinese Buns

I just realized today I haven’t written a blog post about a place I’m always at, Logo’s Bakery.  If you love Chinese pastries and baked goodies, this is one of my favourite places to get them here in Calgary.  This is my usual routine when I go there, have dim sum at Central Grand upstairs, then walk down the steepest set of stairs ever, and right there, Logo’s Bakery, with tons of different options.  My usuals are raisin sticks, coconut buns, pineapple buns, hot dog buns, and something curry. The baked goods are super fresh, very tasty and I always pick up at least 6 or a dozen for home.  Prices are very reasonable and you won’t be disappointed in this place.  You can find this place on the main floor in the 2 storey Chinese mall on the SW corner of 16th Ave and Centre Street N. Valentine’s Day – Perfect side gift Crave Cupcakes

As quoted by my wife on Facebook “Being married to a food blogger finally paid off…after a long day at work came home to free treats from Crave:)”  This is true, writing a food blog does have it’s perks once in awhile and Crave Cupcakes were generous enough to  offer us a sampler from their Valentine’s Menu. Everyone knows Crave Cupcakes are absolutely delicious.  I’m sure I’m not the only one to say this but the cake portion of the cupcakes are by far hands down the best, moist and perfect.  We even had Crave Cupcakes as our wedding cake tower. Today’s sampler included February’s Cupcake Craving of the Month, a chocolate cake filled with cherries and a hint of kirsch, topped with a dark chocolate ganache infused with a little more kirsch.  What was really nice was that the cake was not over powered with cherries, it just had the perfect amount.  Obviously it’s lots of chocolate so make sure you’re a chocolate lover to eat this one.  Tasted very similar to a black forest cake.  The second item was the Chocolate Caramel Tart, which is a dark chocolate tart filled with vanilla bean infused caramel topped with Valrohnoa Caramelia Milk chocolate ganache and topped with a pinch of sea salt.  The guys at the counter told me this was to die for and YUUUUPPPP  they were right,  I loved this.  I’m even drooling thinking about it right now.  It’s my type of dessert, I just love sea salt and caramel, what a great combination. Below I’m posting their Valentine’s Day Menu, pre-orders are recommended and you can call them at 1-855-MY.CRAVE or email them at orders@cravecupcakes.ca. What’s In Front Of Me:    ...

Just Found A Hidden Gem – Patisserie du Soleil

The perfect cafe tucked away in the heart of Woodbine in the SW is where I visited last Thursday for breakfast.  I came across this place doing a U-Turn showing some houses one day and saw this neat little cafe, I told myself that I definitely need to come back and check this place out.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the moment I walked into this cafe, I knew I was in for a truly great experience.  Walking up to the counter, the wall menu was huge, lots of choices, coffees, teas, breakfast and lunch.  Beside the counter is 2 large displays of French pastries and desserts.  To the right of the counter is a ton of in house made Gelato which I didn’t get a chance to try yet. After my meal I got a chance to speak with the owner and executive pastry chef, it was very nice and refreshing to hear about the passion and love he puts into his gift.  Everything is made from scratch and you can tell the high quality in his work.  They use the freshest of ingredients and believe in using local foods to support local business.  There is also a sister location in Glenmore Landing but in my opinion, you must try this experience here at the Woodbine location first. I started off with a Chocolate Truffle Mochaccino, which was delicious.  It was hard to actually choose what I wanted to try first but the Eggs Florentine stuck out at me (poached eggs served on a bed of sautéed spinach, crumbled bacon, and caramelized shallots, served with toast you can add smoked salmon as well).  This was such a beautiful and light dish with the perfect balance of flavours.  I also had the opportunity to try a savoury scone hot and fresh, it was absolutely to die for.  So the crazy foodie in me, I just had to share this with as many people as I could.  So I took home 36 pieces of freshly baked goods to share with my office, friends and family.  The cranberry white chocolate scone was a hit!  I also got the chance to try the chocolate cinnamon bun and almond croissant, which both were outstanding. I can’t wait to have business meetings here, family breakfast and lunches, how has it taken me this long to find this absolute gem.
